Upload traces with the Android app

Install the app from the console Android app page, choose files or folders, receive traces from other apps and upload in the background, on Wi-Fi only if you prefer.

Applies to: Android app 1.2.1, Android 8 or later

The Android app uploads traces from your phone to the console and notifies you when the analysis finishes. It only accesses the console: the processing still runs on the server. The upload goes in chunks, in the background, and resumes on its own after a network drop.

Before you start

  • A phone with Android 8 or later.
  • A console account, with the Terms of Service and the Privacy Policy accepted in the browser. Before acceptance, the app shows Terms not accepted yet and the Open in browser button.
  • The traces on the phone, or in an app that can share them, such as the email app or a file manager.

Install the app

  1. On your computer, sign in to the console and click Android app in the top menu.
  2. Scan the QR code on the page with the phone camera and sign in to the console in the phone browser.
  3. Tap Download the app.
  4. Open the downloaded file. If Android asks, allow installing apps from this source for the browser you used only.
  5. In the app, under Server address, enter https://app.waitscope.com, the address the field suggests.
  6. Sign in with the same username and password as the console and, after the password, enter the code from the authenticator app.

Result: the app opens the Analyses list, with the same analyses as the console History.

The Android app page shows the version, the size and the SHA-256 of the file. When a new version comes out, the app shows the Update button and installs over the current one, without losing access.

An app set up with https://waitscope.io, the previous address, keeps working for a while, and does not change address on its own. To move to the new one, open Settings, tap Change server, enter https://app.waitscope.com and sign in again: the change ends the session on this device.

Upload traces

  1. In the Analyses list, tap Upload traces.
  2. Tap Choose files or Choose folder and choose the traces.
  3. Check the list: .trm files, hidden files and empty files are left out, with a warning.
  4. Tap Upload and analyze.
  5. If the app asks Are these traces from the same process?, choose Yes, same process: analyze together or No, analyze each trace separately (when to analyze together).

Result: the Upload in progress panel shows, for example, Uploading file 1 of 3. and the bytes sent, and the Uploading traces notification follows the upload outside the app. At the end, Upload complete, processing on the server appears.

Receive from another app

In the email app, a messaging app or the file manager, open the trace with Open with or Share and choose WaitScope. The app opens the upload screen with the file.

  • The app immediately copies the file to its own private area and uploads the copy, which is deleted when the upload finishes, when it is canceled or when the file is removed from the selection. Until then, the trace takes up twice the space on the phone.
  • If the copy fails, Files received from another app: Android may revoke access to them when the app closes. appears. To upload with the app closed, choose the file with Choose files or Choose folder.

Background upload and Wi-Fi only

  • You can close the app: the upload continues in the background, with the progress notification and the Cancel button.
  • Without a network, the upload waits and resumes on its own, from where it stopped, when the network comes back.
  • In Upload settings, on the upload screen, turn on Upload on Wi-Fi only: on mobile data, the upload waits for a Wi-Fi network to continue.
  • To give up, tap Cancel upload. What has already reached the server is deleted and the upload cannot be resumed; the files on the phone do not change.
  • The app makes one upload at a time. While one is running, it asks you to wait before uploading other traces.

The server keeps the half-finished upload for up to 24 hours without a new chunk, while the app session lasts. If the upload stays stopped longer than that, or if the session ends midway, what had arrived is deleted: after you sign in again, the app restarts the upload from the beginning.

Analysis done notification

The app checks the server when it opens and, in the background, every 15 minutes when there is a network. When an analysis finishes, it notifies you with Analysis done or Analysis ended with an error, and tapping the notification opens the analysis. The notification shows the file name only with the phone unlocked.

  • On Android 13 or later, the app asks for the notification permission. When Notify when it finishes? appears, tap Turn on notifications.
  • To change it later, open Settings from the icon in the analyses list and use Adjust in Android, in the Notifications section.
  • The check goes straight to the console, with no third-party service.

Common problems

  • This address does not respond like a WaitScope server. Check the address: https://app.waitscope.com.
  • Terms not accepted yet. Tap Open in browser, accept in the console and return to the app.
  • There is a previous upload from this device in progress on the server. Tap Resume previous, if it is the same set of files, or Cancel previous to upload the new ones.
  • No access to the file, with its name. Android revoked the app's access to the file. Tap Choose again and choose the same file, with the same name and size: the upload continues from where it stopped.
  • Update the app. The server no longer accepts the installed version: tap Download the new version.
